After finishing at the Royal Military Academy in Brussels in 2000 with a master’s degree in science in mathematical engineering, Erwin Orye started working on the technical integration of acquired tactical communications equipment in the defence forces. Afterwards, he became material resources manager responsible for tactical radios and later responsible for secure and classified networks. Between those two functions, he served two years as the staff officer for operations and training in the (BEL) 6th signal battalion. From 2017 to 2021, he worked at the NATO CCDCOE within the strategic branch and consequently joined the BEL military cyber directorate during the summer of 2021. In October 2022, Belgian Defence created a Cyber Command, and major Orye became the innovation officer. He focuses primarily on the military aspects of using 5G networks and the opportunities and threats of quantum computing. Parallel to his professional work, he is pursuing a PhD in cybersecurity on wireless communications in transportation.
